Membership in the Royal Society of Canada is one of the highest accolades obtainable from one's academic peers. The website for the Royal Society of Canada at SFU provides the following:
  • Highlights of the activities and accomplishments of the Simon Fraser University members of the Royal Society of Canada.
  • Promotion and archives of lectures given in a continuing series of Royal Society lectures at SFU. Three or four such lectures are intended in each academic year.
  • Resources to assist SFU facuty in nominating their colleagues for membership; and for making nominations for other awards and prizes.

On June 2, 2006, as part of Simon Fraser University's 40th Anniversary celebrations, the SFU members of the Royal Society of Canada, with support from the University, sponsored a special public gathering of past recipients of the Excellence in Teaching Award (1982-2005). A photo gallery commemorating SFU's distinguished teachers was unveiled at this event. The gathering and the gallery were initiated to recognize the contributions of outstanding teachers and to demonstrate the high value placed on excellent teaching by SFU.
