Research Interests

Dr. Pinto's current research concentrates on carbohydrate-protein interactions and carbohydrate mimicry. His lab is investigating the molecular mechanisms of carbohydrate-mediated recognition with a focus on oligosaccharides. By understanding this form of bio-recognition, Dr. Pinto hopes to design improved immunodiagnostic reagents, vaccines, and therapeutic agents.

A recent result of his research was the discovery of a new class of glycosidase inhibitor based on a naturally occurring glycosidase inhibitor, Salacinol. Salacinol was isolated from Salacia reticulata, a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of Type-2 diabetes mellitus.

In 2003, Dr. Pinto was awarded one of the country's most prestigious academic accolades: a fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada.
